Start with the reader’s needs
An assessment begins with the problem the reader wants to solve, the devices they use and the limitations that could affect their choice. A product that suits one household, platform or budget may be unsuitable for another.
Assess the important differences
The relevant criteria depend on the product and use case. They include functionality, compatibility, usability, privacy implications, security evidence, subscription terms and value.
A longer feature list does not automatically mean a better product. A missing feature, intrusive permission requirement or restrictive renewal condition may matter more than several minor advantages.
Match conclusions to evidence
Direct testing can establish observations about the tasks and conditions assessed. Source research can establish documented features, policies and terms. Independent audits and research may support technical claims within their stated scope.
These forms of evidence are not interchangeable. A vendor claim is not an independently verified finding, and routine use does not prove that a product prevents every threat.

Rankings and recommendations
Ranked guides should explain why each recommended product suits the intended reader. Comparisons should identify material advantages, compromises and alternatives.
A product may rank differently in guides addressing different needs. A recommendation should be supported by the article’s evidence and reasoning, not by affiliate commission or brand popularity.
Ratings and scores
Where a numerical rating appears, the article should explain the criteria and evidence behind it. Ratings summarise editorial judgement unless a specific measurement method is stated. They are not security certifications or guarantees of future performance.
We do not claim that a hidden universal formula determines every ranking.
Commercial relationships
Payment, affiliate commission or supplied access must not determine a favourable verdict. Relevant commercial arrangements must be disclosed. Vendors may provide factual corrections, but editorial decisions remain with Impulsec.

Updates and corrections
Material changes to a product, its terms or the evidence may require a recommendation to change. Publication, substantive update and testing dates should reflect the work actually completed.
