If ExpressVPN is not working, first identify whether the app cannot connect, connects without internet access, or fails on just one website. Then check your ordinary internet connection, update the app and try another server. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which step helped.
This guide covers troubleshooting on your own device or a network you are authorised to manage. Menu names and protocol choices vary by app version and platform. The steps below are based on current ExpressVPN support documentation; they are not a claim that every possible fault has been reproduced in our testing.
Start With the Symptom
- The app stays on Connecting: work through the connection checks below.
- The app says Connected but nothing loads: compare several sites and follow the browsing checks.
- Only one service fails: investigate that service before resetting your device.
- Internet stops after disconnecting: check the kill switch and the Windows guidance below.
Check the Connection Without Removing Your Protection
On a trusted network, pause sensitive activity before deliberately disconnecting the VPN to check ordinary browsing. That test uses your normal connection and IP address. If you need all traffic to remain inside the VPN, keep the protection enabled and use another device or contact support instead.
A failed test without the VPN does not automatically prove your broadband is down. An always-on kill switch can deliberately block traffic while the VPN is disconnected. Check for that explanation before changing router or DNS settings.
If another device on the same network also cannot load ordinary websites, investigate the network connection first. If ordinary browsing works but VPN connections fail, the problem is narrowed to the VPN connection path, software or network interaction; it does not prove a specific server is down.
If ExpressVPN Cannot Connect
Use ExpressVPN’s connection troubleshooting guide alongside these checks:
- Install the current app from ExpressVPN or your device’s official app store, then reopen it.
- Try a different recommended location. Success on a second location suggests a location-specific or routing problem, without proving its cause.
- Start with Automatic protocol selection. If it fails, try an available alternative shown in your app. Do not assume every platform offers the same list.
- If you use ExpressVPN Dedicated IP, retain a supported configuration. ExpressVPN currently specifies Lightway for this feature.
- Check security-software alerts and whether another VPN is actively controlling the connection. Get product-specific advice before changing firewall rules.
Avoid disabling antivirus or opening broad firewall exceptions as a routine first step. On a work or school device, ask the administrator to investigate. Removing managed VPN profiles or security controls can disrupt access and protection.
If It Connects but Websites Do Not Load
Try more than one website and, where practical, another browser. A single site’s failure may involve the site, your browser or its treatment of VPN traffic. It is different from a complete loss of connectivity. ExpressVPN’s connected-but-no-internet guide covers this symptom separately.
Next, try another location and an available protocol. Note whether all sites recover or just the original one. Avoid changing DNS, browser extensions and VPN settings simultaneously; that makes it difficult to identify the cause or undo a change.
A streaming error or unexpected catalogue is not proof that the VPN tunnel failed. Services also use account settings and access rules. Use the service’s and ExpressVPN’s support guidance for the exact error; no server change guarantees access to a particular programme.
Check the Relevant Device Settings
Use the instructions for your installed app rather than copying a menu path from another platform.
Windows: Internet Stops After Disconnecting
ExpressVPN’s Windows app has an advanced kill-switch option that can block traffic even after an intentional disconnection. Under Profile → Settings → Internet Kill Switch, check whether Enable at all times is selected. The Windows recovery guide explains this behaviour and the separate DNS-restoration issue.
If you intentionally require VPN-only connectivity, reconnect the VPN rather than weakening that setting. Turning off the always-on mode permits ordinary internet access when the VPN is disconnected. Do not replace custom work, school or filtering DNS settings without the administrator’s guidance.
iPhone, Android, TV and Routers
- iPhone or Android: update through the official app store, restart the app and test another available location or protocol. Do not treat an iOS setting as an Android instruction.
- Fire TV or Android TV: update the installed TV app and use its own location and protocol controls. Desktop menu paths will differ.
- Router: establish whether the affected device uses the router VPN or a separate device app. Avoid changing a shared router connection while other people depend on it.
Escalate With Useful Evidence
Before contacting support, note the device, operating system, app version, exact error, network type, location and protocol tried. Record whether the problem affects one device, several devices or one website. Share diagnostic logs only through the official support channel; do not post account details or logs publicly.
Reinstallation is a later option if support recommends it. Record important preferences first, and use the official installer. A working connection after reinstalling still needs checking in the browser or app that originally failed.
An IP checker can help confirm the browser’s apparent connection path, but it does not certify every app or prove complete privacy. Split tunnelling and other routing choices can produce different results. If your concern is trust rather than a connection fault, our guide to ExpressVPN’s privacy evidence and limitations addresses that separate decision.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a different server fixing the problem prove the first server was down?
No. It is useful diagnostic evidence, but routing, filtering or a temporary connection problem can also explain the difference.
Should I turn off the kill switch to fix my internet?
Check whether it is deliberately blocking an unprotected connection. Keep it enabled if you need VPN-only traffic; contact support if you cannot restore the VPN connection.
Will reinstalling ExpressVPN fix every connection problem?
No. A network restriction, account issue or service-specific problem can remain after reinstallation. Record the error and try the targeted checks first.
