Quick verdict: Start with ExpressVPN Basic if the lower initial payment in the dated USD comparison is your priority. Compare NordVPN when controls such as Double VPN meet a specific need on your supported platform. Both Basic plans cover ten simultaneous connections, so device count alone does not decide between them. Compare the full charge and renewal before buying.
This comparison separates upfront payment, renewal, device coverage and practical VPN controls. My previous hands-on use informs the perspective, while the dated offer examples help explain what to compare at checkout.

A low monthly equivalent beside a multi-year offer does not mean you pay that amount each month. Compare the initial charge, the length of service it buys and the renewal separately.
1. ExpressVPN: first to compare for the inspected Basic offer
ExpressVPN Basic is the more attractive starting point when the buying decision is a core VPN subscription for up to ten devices at the lower inspected upfront price. The advertised offer is USD83.72 for the first 28 months, with a listed annual renewal of USD99.95. That does not make it the cheapest VPN in every market or for every billing period.
The useful distinction in this comparison is the plan structure. ExpressVPN lists ten simultaneous connections for Basic, twelve for Advanced and fourteen for Pro. If ten are sufficient, a higher allowance is not a reason to pay for extras you do not need. If ten are insufficient, price the appropriate tier before making the choice.
ExpressVPN’s connection features include Lightway and kill-switch protection, with availability and behaviour depending on the app and platform. A feature on one operating system should not be assumed to behave identically on another. Check the particular app before buying for a specialised setup.
Best fit: a buyer whose supported devices and required features fit Basic and who values the inspected lower initial payment. Less suitable: someone buying Basic while expecting the connection allowance or extras of a higher tier.

2. NordVPN: compare its controls against your actual task
NordVPN is worth considering when one of its specific VPN features, such as Double VPN, addresses a need you have identified. Its Basic plan also supports up to ten simultaneous connections. The inspected long-term offer is USD94.23 for the first 27 months, with a listed annual renewal of USD139.08.
NordVPN’s broader feature range is not a reason to assume that every security extra is included in Basic. Bundles and names can differ by region, and some additional services belong to higher tiers. Compare the exact plan on the same terms as ExpressVPN Basic rather than setting one provider’s most expensive bundle against the other’s entry plan.
NordLynx, kill-switch options, split tunnelling and Double VPN are among the features to investigate. Platform availability matters more than a long list of names. For example, a person who needs a particular app excluded from the VPN should verify split-tunnelling support on that operating system before paying.
Best fit: someone who can name a supported NordVPN feature they intend to use and accepts the relevant plan cost. Less suitable: a buyer assuming NordVPN must be cheaper because an older comparison said so.

Pricing: compare the payment, term and renewal
The ExpressVPN pricing page showed Basic at an advertised USD2.99 monthly equivalent, billed as USD83.72 for 28 months. The NordVPN pricing page showed Basic at USD3.49 equivalent, billed as USD94.23 for 27 months.
ExpressVPN’s initial charge is USD10.51 lower in that snapshot, and the offer includes one more month. These are different term lengths, so the two upfront amounts are not prices for an identical period. The advertised equivalents help compare them, but neither should be mistaken for a cancellable monthly payment of USD2.99 or USD3.49.
NordVPN also listed USD65.88 for its first twelve months and USD14.99 on monthly billing. A longer plan can have a lower equivalent monthly cost while still requiring a larger immediate payment. Choose a commitment you actually want rather than extending it solely to obtain a headline rate.
The listed annual renewal amounts are USD99.95 for ExpressVPN Basic and USD139.08 for NordVPN Basic, a USD39.13 difference. Renewal prices can change. Check the renewal statement on the actual offer and keep the confirmation so you know the billing date and cancellation route.
When more connections change the comparison
ExpressVPN’s inspected Advanced offer was USD125.72 for the first 28 months, with a listed USD119.95 annual renewal and twelve simultaneous connections. Pro was USD209.72 for the first 28 months, with USD199.95 annual renewal and fourteen connections. Those are different products from Basic, not extra connections silently included in its price. The provider’s connection-limit guidance explains the tiers.
Refund guarantees are not free trials
Both providers advertise a 30-day guarantee for eligible new or initial purchases. That is different from a free trial: payment and eligibility conditions still matter. Read the policy for the purchase channel you intend to use, including any app-store route. Do not assume that deleting an application cancels a subscription or that an advertised guarantee removes every purchase condition.
Features and compatibility: start with the device
Both providers offer core applications for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS. That is a starting point, not proof that every function is available everywhere. Router, television and other device setups need their own compatibility checks. A browser extension, a full-device VPN and a router installation should not be treated as interchangeable.
Use the current NordVPN feature documentation and ExpressVPN feature documentation to check the control that matters to you. NordLynx and Lightway are relevant protocol choices, but protocol names alone do not establish which service will be faster on your connection. Nor does the existence of a kill switch establish identical behaviour during sleep, reconnection and network changes across every platform.
A useful shortlist has three entries: the device, the task and the setting needed. For instance, if a work application must remain outside the tunnel, confirm the supported split-tunnelling workflow. If the household wants a router installation, check the exact router model and recovery instructions. Do not purchase on a generic claim that either provider supports every router.
I would not use raw server counts as the deciding factor here. The location you need, the application that supports it and how it works on your network are more relevant than a large total that may quickly become outdated.
Speed, streaming and downloads
I am not declaring a current measured speed winner between these services. A useful speed comparison would need a recorded connection baseline, device, location, protocol, server choice and repeatable measurements under comparable conditions.
Throughput and latency answer different questions. A connection can have enough throughput for a large download but still feel poor during an interactive call if latency or instability is high. Another can work well for browsing while taking longer to transfer a large file. Match the assessment to what you actually do.
For your own legitimate use, compare the application on the device and connection that matter. Check ordinary browsing, a video call or an authorised transfer with the relevant VPN settings. Treat a result from one location or network as evidence about that setup, not a universal ranking.
Streaming availability is also variable. A provider’s claim or a successful historical connection does not guarantee that a particular catalogue or service will remain accessible. Follow applicable rules and the service’s terms. Neither VPN receives an unconditional streaming recommendation on this page.
The same restraint applies to peer-to-peer transfers and travel. A VPN is not permission to infringe copyright or ignore local restrictions. This comparison does not claim current testing in China, the UAE or other restrictive environments, and neither service is presented as guaranteed to work there.
Privacy, ownership and the limits of no-logs claims
NordVPN identifies its service company as NordVPN S.A. in Panama and describes its wider corporate relationship with Nord Security, including its parent in the Netherlands. See its ownership information and jurisdiction explanation. ExpressVPN’s privacy policy identifies Express Technologies Ltd. in the British Virgin Islands and its ultimate parent, Kape Technologies.
Those facts help identify the businesses and policies involved. They do not make either service immune to legal obligations or establish that one jurisdiction guarantees better privacy for every reader.
Read a no-logs statement for what it covers. A policy about browsing activity or connection records does not necessarily mean that a company holds no information about an account. Billing details, aggregate service information, website data and optional diagnostics are separate questions. Check which information is collected, why it is collected and which choices the account settings offer.
The providers publish supporting material through the NordVPN trust centre and ExpressVPN trust centre. Independent assessments can inform a decision, but their date, scope and tested systems matter. An audit is not a guarantee of all future behaviour. RAM-only server claims likewise describe part of an architecture, not an answer to every question about account data.
A VPN also does not erase identity from an account you log into, remove every tracking mechanism or protect you from every malicious message. Keep software updated and use strong account security. Neither provider earns a blanket privacy-winner label from its marketing language alone.
Setup and support: check the workflow you need
The practical question is whether you can find the connection and settings you need on your own devices. A simple connection screen is useful for an everyday routine; additional controls are useful only when they serve a real purpose. Avoid equating the number of settings with security or ease of use.
Check the official installation instructions for each device before committing. A desktop or mobile application may be straightforward while a router or less common platform needs additional preparation. Do not assume that one successful installation proves the whole household’s devices are covered.
Support quality cannot be established by an invented response-time figure. This article makes no fresh timed support comparison. For an unusual setup, look for documentation that actually addresses it and use the provider’s support channel to clarify a specific compatibility question. Keep subscription or account problems separate from general connection troubleshooting.
Final verdict: choose the plan that solves your problem
For the inspected long-term Basic offers, I would compare ExpressVPN first on upfront cost. Its USD83.72 payment is lower than NordVPN’s USD94.23, and both Basic plans cover ten simultaneous connections. That is a specific, dated value judgement rather than a claim that ExpressVPN is always cheaper or faster.
Choose NordVPN for an identified feature fit, not an assumed price advantage. If its supported controls address your requirements, compare their value against the initial and renewal charges. Confirm that the chosen tier and operating system include what you need.
If speed on your network, a particular television setup or a specialised application is decisive, this article’s price comparison cannot settle that question. Check the exact workflow and purchase terms. A lower price has little value if the product cannot perform the required task.

Frequently asked questions
Is ExpressVPN cheaper than NordVPN?
In the USD long-term Basic offers inspected on 1 October 2026, ExpressVPN’s initial payment was lower: USD83.72 for 28 months versus USD94.23 for 27 months. Prices and terms vary, so check the actual offer and renewal before buying.
How many devices can I connect?
Both Basic plans support ten simultaneous connections. ExpressVPN lists twelve for Advanced and fourteen for Pro. Distinguish the number of installations from the number of connections allowed at one time.
Which is faster?
This comparison does not establish a current measured winner. Device, network, location, server and protocol can affect results. Match any test to the application you intend to use.
Will either VPN always work with my streaming service?
No continuous access is guaranteed here. Availability and service rules can change. Check the supported setup and comply with the service’s terms and applicable rules.
Does no-logs mean the provider has no information about me?
No. Read the policy’s scope. Activity or connection-log claims are distinct from account, billing, website and optional diagnostic information. A VPN also does not make a signed-in account anonymous.
Is a money-back guarantee a free trial?
No. It is a refund promise subject to its stated eligibility and purchase conditions. Check the policy and cancellation route for the service or store that will bill you.
