Quick verdict: Choose Mullvad if a minimal signup footprint and a flat monthly price matter most. Choose ExpressVPN if ten or more simultaneous connections, wider device options and live-chat help suit you better. Neither is a universal speed or streaming winner, and neither makes your signed-in accounts anonymous.
These services approach the buying decision differently: Mullvad sells prepaid VPN time on a numbered account; ExpressVPN sells tiered subscriptions with different device allowances and extras. Here is how those differences affect a household, a short trip and a privacy-focused setup.

| Product | Pricing (devices/users) | Main capabilities |
|---|---|---|
Full review | US Basic offer: $83.72 for 28 months; listed renewal $99.95/year; 10 simultaneous devices. Advanced/Pro are different bundles. Check pricing | Consumer VPN; plan-dependent security extras. |
Full review | €5 per month, VAT included; 5 devices. Same monthly rate across prepaid durations. View plans | Account-number VPN with prepaid access. |
ExpressVPN: more device room and guided setup
ExpressVPN fits a household that wants familiar desktop, phone, TV and router options without planning every connection around a five-device ceiling. Basic allows ten simultaneous VPN connections; Advanced allows twelve and Express Pro fourteen. Higher tiers add separate products, so buy the tier whose actual benefits you need rather than assuming every advertised extra comes with Basic.
The inspected USD Basic offer charges $83.72 for the first 28 months, equivalent to $2.99 per month, then lists $99.95 annual renewal. That is an upfront purchase, not a $2.99 monthly subscription. Advanced and Express Pro have different charges. Basic includes Lite Protection for ads, malicious sites and adult sites; tracker blocking and ExpressKeys belong to higher tiers. Filtering does not replace antivirus or parental supervision.
ExpressVPN’s 30-day website guarantee is for new users under its terms. App-store subscriptions follow their respective conditions. A refund period requires payment first; it is separate from an eligible free trial. The service suits people who value setup guidance and wider device coverage, but promotional pricing, annual renewal and tier-dependent extras make it less straightforward than Mullvad’s flat rate.

Mullvad: less signup data and flexible spending
Mullvad is the better fit when you want to avoid giving an email address merely to create a VPN account. It generates an account number that functions as your account identifier. Store it securely: the absence of an email-based login changes recovery expectations as well as the signup footprint.
The price is €5 per month including VAT, whether you buy one month or prepay a longer period. Five devices are supported. A one-month trip therefore costs €5 in the provider’s base currency; three months cost €15 and a year €60. Currency conversion or payment-method costs can change what your bank charges. There is no introductory multi-year discount to compare with a later annual renewal.
A numbered account does not anonymise a card payment. Mullvad explains that bank and payment processors retain identifying records, and its policy separately describes payment tokens, operational statistics and support communications. Reducing account data and eliminating every possible identifier are different goals.
Mullvad does not offer port forwarding. It is a privacy-oriented VPN, not a promise of access to a particular streaming catalogue. Its documented fourteen-day refund policy has payment-method exceptions; inspect those before paying cash or cryptocurrency. Choose ExpressVPN instead if the five-device limit or absence of the same bundle and live-chat model would inconvenience you.

What the privacy difference actually means
A consumer VPN encrypts traffic between your device and its VPN server, then routes it onward. Your local network sees a VPN connection rather than the ordinary destination traffic inside the tunnel. The VPN provider becomes another organisation you trust with routing information; HTTPS remains important beyond the exit server.
| Question | ExpressVPN | Mullvad |
|---|---|---|
| Signup footprint | Account/subscription model | Numbered account without an email requirement |
| Device planning | Basic 10; Advanced 12; Express Pro 14 simultaneous connections | Five devices |
| Spending model | Discounted initial subscription; subsequent renewal | €5 per month prepaid |
| Website recognition | Accounts and browser identifiers can still recognise you | Accounts and browser identifiers can still recognise you |
No-logs statements and independent assessments need their dates and scopes read carefully. They do not prove every future server configuration, payment record or support interaction contains no data. Nor do they establish which provider is faster on your hotel network. This comparison uses documented capabilities and buyer fit; it does not claim a new speed benchmark or support-resolution test.
A VPN protects covered traffic between your device and its server. HTTPS separately protects web content to the website. Signing in still identifies you to that website.
Compare the whole commitment, not just the headline
Compare prices in the same currency and for the period you will actually use. Mullvad’s €60 for twelve months cannot be declared cheaper or dearer than a USD introductory offer without a dated exchange rate and the same time horizon. Do not commit to 28 months solely because its monthly equivalent is lower than a one-month price.
- For one trip, compare a genuinely monthly or prepaid purchase with the entire long-term charge.
- For a household, count devices likely to be online at the same time; include phones, tablets and TV clients.
- Record the renewal amount, currency, billing period and cancellation deadline before confirming a subscription.
- Check the exact payment method’s refund terms. A guarantee is not a permanent free plan.
ExpressVPN Advanced and Pro extras also vary with subscription duration and territory. Identity Defender is limited to eligible U.S. customers; eSIM use requires a compatible, carrier-unlocked phone and eligible paid subscription. The currently inspected offer describes a capped 3GB allowance, so do not treat older launch copy about unlimited travel data as a current entitlement.
A practical check before relying on either VPN
- Install the current official app while you have a trusted internet connection.
- Enable the supported kill-switch or always-on protection for your operating system; read how it behaves when you deliberately disconnect.
- Connect and check the outward IP address and DNS result. Confirm any split-tunnel exclusions are intentional.
- Try the websites, work access and streaming accounts you are entitled to use before travel; a successful connection does not guarantee every service works.
- Keep a lawful fallback such as mobile data. Neither provider guarantees access on every restricted network.
If a local printer, banking app or captive portal fails, diagnose it before repeatedly changing servers. A split-tunnel exclusion sends that traffic outside the VPN. On an unfamiliar network, a mobile-data alternative may be safer than leaving important traffic unprotected.
Which should you choose?
Mullvad is my choice for minimal signup and a short, predictable commitment. Five devices and a privacy-focused service are enough for that job. ExpressVPN is the stronger fit for wider household coverage and its setup ecosystem. Its extra device room comes with subscription and bundle complexity. Pick the decision that fits your devices and budget; neither receives an unsupported universal performance crown.
If wider device coverage is your deciding factor:
Frequently asked questions
Is Mullvad cheaper than ExpressVPN?
Mullvad costs €5 per month including VAT. ExpressVPN has term- and tier-specific offers with upfront and renewal charges. Compare the same duration and currency before choosing.
Does Mullvad require an email address?
No. It uses a generated account number. Card, bank and payment-processor records are separate from the signup requirement.
How many devices can I connect?
Mullvad supports five devices. ExpressVPN Basic, Advanced and Express Pro allow ten, twelve and fourteen simultaneous VPN connections respectively.
Will either make me completely anonymous?
No. Websites can recognise signed-in accounts, cookies and other identifiers. A VPN is one connection-protection tool, not complete anonymity.
Can I rely on either to unlock streaming?
Neither guarantees access. Availability depends on your subscription rights, service terms, territory and current VPN blocking.
Is a money-back guarantee a free plan?
No. You pay first and must meet the refund conditions. Any eligible app-store or website trial is a separate offer.
