Cheap should mean affordable for the time you will actually use the VPN. This guide separates a short commitment, a long prepaid deal and a bundle-based alternative, then shows how to compare their costs without mixing currencies or hiding renewal.

I put spending predictability and avoiding an unnecessary long commitment ahead of the lowest promotional monthly equivalent. Mullvad therefore leads for a reader unsure how long they need the service. PIA fills the long-term-value role; Surfshark provides a distinct tiered alternative. This is not a claim that a euro price is universally lower than a dollar price.

The former seven-provider list mixed different billing models and repeated similar paid-VPN roles. CyberGhost remains a useful alternative if its longer refund window and task-labelled servers matter, but its promotional term and annual renewal need a separate check. NordVPN, ExpressVPN and PureVPN do not add enough distinct budget decisions to justify stretching this shortlist. Inclusion and order follow the buying job, not overall review scores.

Mullvad charges €5 per month including VAT, whether you prepay one month or longer. One month is €5; three are €15; twelve are €60. Its five-device allowance suits one person’s usual desktop and mobile setup, but a larger household may need a different service. Account creation uses a generated number rather than an email address.

The benefit is the small initial commitment. If you stop needing it after a trip, you have not prepaid several years. Keep your account number securely and check the selected payment method’s fourteen-day refund conditions before paying; some methods have exceptions.

Mullvad does not support port forwarding and is not a promise of reliable streaming access. Choose PIA if supported-location port forwarding is part of your intended VPN workflow; choose a different plan if five devices are insufficient. The flat price is easy to understand, but it is not necessarily the cheapest way to buy several years of VPN time.

Private Internet Access fits a buyer who expects to use a VPN for years and wants settings such as WireGuard/OpenVPN choices, supported-client kill-switch controls and port forwarding in supported locations. Its VPN subscription permits unlimited simultaneous devices. Availability of a client or protocol does not guarantee every setting on every operating system.

The inspected USD purchase page lists $11.95 monthly or $47.88 for a year, with the same displayed renewal amount and interval for each. Its longer offer shows three years plus three extra months at a $2.03 monthly equivalent, with $79 renewal every three years. Use the actual initial total shown at checkout; multiplying a rounded $2.03 by 39 yields $79.17 and should not be presented as the exact charge.

At a $79 renewal, the next 36 months average about $2.19 per month. The bonus-month introductory equivalent and the subsequent three-year period are different calculations. New-subscriber website purchases advertise a thirty-day guarantee; third-party store refunds follow store terms. Antivirus and a dedicated IP are optional extras, not part of every headline VPN price.

The main drawback is the commitment: a low long-term average can cost more in cash today than a month of Mullvad. Port forwarding is not available in every VPN location, and neither unlimited devices nor a low price ensures streaming access.

Surfshark Starter is the sensible tier to compare when you mainly need a VPN. Paid access allows unlimited simultaneous devices, subject to its terms. One and One+ add other products; do not pay for a bundle because a comparison table incorrectly credits all of its features to Starter.

The inspected euro offer charges €67.23 for 27 months, or €2.49 per month, with VAT potentially added. One is €75.33 for that period, an €8.10 extra upfront commitment; One+ is €121.23, an extra €54 over Starter. Those are bundle differences in the observed offer, not permanent global prices.

A two-year introductory purchase can renew annually. The future renewal amount was not established by the inspected offer, so verify it at checkout rather than applying €2.49 indefinitely. Trial access has a three-device limit distinct from unlimited paid access; cancel a trial through its purchase channel rather than assuming a website refund covers an app-store charge.

When a free plan is the cheaper decision

3. Check your intended service and network before a long commitment. No VPN guarantees streaming access.
4. Record the initial total, renewal charge, renewal period, tax and cancellation path.
5. Use HTTPS, device updates and strong account authentication; a VPN does not replace antivirus or prevent every scam.

For a short or uncertain need, my first choice is Mullvad’s flat monthly model. For an established long-term need, compare PIA’s exact initial total and three-year renewal. Surfshark Starter is the alternative if its client features and tier model fit you. The right cheap VPN is the one whose full commitment and limits suit your use, not simply the lowest number beside “per month.”
